CIT Staff Requests to Keep Old CIT-Owned Computers

CIT staff, including retirees, may request to keep old computers that are at least 3 1/2 years old.

This article applies to: CIT Intranet

The Central IT Service Group (CITSG) manages university-owned desktop and laptop computers for CIT staff, using a 4-year replacement cycle.

CIT-owned computers which have been replaced are handled as follows:

  • Cornell staff, as well as staff who are retiring, may choose to keep their old computer if it is at least 3 1/2 years old.
  • Any CIT staff member leaving Cornell in good standing, or retiring, may buy out their computer if is is less than 3 1/2 years old.  Cost will be determined by the time remaining of its 4 year life-span. Please contact CIT Desktop Support for more information.
  • If CIT agrees to let a staff member keep an old computer, security and licensing concerns require that the old computers be completely wiped and returned to the staff person without an operating system.
  • The staff member or retiree will be responsible for purchasing an operating system and other software and installing them.
  • If a staff member or retiree does not request to keep their old computer, CITSG will wipe the computer and arrange to donate it to Cornell Computer Reuse Association (contact Alan Heiman) or recycle it through Cornell’s R5 program.
