On Monday, May 13, 2024, a new voice isolation feature will be available in Microsoft Teams to improve background noise suppression.

Basic background noise suppression is enabled by default, but you can adjust your settings as desired. You can take advantage of this feature to reduce audible distractions such as neighborhood yardwork, barking dogs, or slamming doors.

The newly released voice isolation feature is an extra level of noise suppression that you can set up to reduce more intense ambient noises, such as others talking in a busy environment like an airport or crowded workspace. The feature uses an AI algorithm and your enrolled voice profile to highlight only your voice, filtering out all other surrounding noise and other voices.

According to Microsoft’s policies, “Your face and voice profiles are used only for the purposes for which you have provided direct consent. Microsoft will not use these profiles for any other purpose. For more information on how we handle your personal data, please see the Microsoft Privacy Statement.”

If you have concerns about setting up a voice profile, please know that it’s optional. You don’t need to use the voice isolation feature to take advantage of regular background noise suppression.
