Install SPSS

Install SPSS 22 (Windows)

Note: Installation instructions are identical for version 21, except for the names of the files ("21" in place of "22"). For assistance installing version 20 or earlier, please contact us.

  1. Determine whether your version of Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.  If you are not sure, please check with your local IT provider.
  2. Download the installer archive to your computer's local hard drive. The installer will be in ZIP format. The filename will be SPSS_Statistics-v22-Win.zip.
  3. After download, right-click the installer file and select Extract All.
  4. After file extraction is complete, you should now see a new folder SPSS_Statistics-v22-Win. Open that folder.
  5. Inside that folder, find the SPSS installer appropriate to your version of Windows:
    • 64-bit systems: Double-click SPSS_Statistics_22_win64_.exe
    • 32-bit systems: Double-click SPSS_Statistics_22_win32_.exe
  6. The IBM SPSS InstallShileld Wizard should launch. It may take a moment to start, and you may need to give Windows permission to proceed.
  7. On the Welcome to IBM SPSS Statistics window, click the Authorized User License radio button, then click Next.
  8. Accept the license terms
  9. Enter the user name you want to use (your NetID would work), and Cornell University as the organization. Click Next.
  10. On the Help Language screen, add any additional languages. (English is always installed.) Click Next.
  11. On the Assistive Technology screen, select whether or not you wish to add JAWS screen reading software. Click Next.
  12. On the Essentials for Python screen, select whether or now you wish to add SPSS Python Essentials. Click Next.
  13. Accept the license terms. (Again). Click Next.
  14. Select the destination folder to install SPSS. We recommend that you use the default location. Click Next.
  15. Click Install to begin the installation. This can take 30-45 minutes to complete.
  16. When the installation is complete, you will be prompted to start the licensing authorization process.  Click OK to begin this process.
  17. On the Product Authorization window, select the button next to License my product now.  Click Next
  18. Enter the authorization code you received in your SPSS order confirmation, then click Next.  (If you don't have your code, you can retrieve it online by following these instructions.)
  19. If successful, the installer should report Successfully processed all codes. Click Next.
  20. Click Finish. You have now completed the installation and license authorization for your new SPSS software.

Install SPSS (Mac OS X)

Note: We strongly advise installing SPSS from a user account that has full Administrator rights on your Mac.

  1. Download the appropriate installer disk image from the CU Software SPSS page. The file name will be SPSS_Statistics-v22-Mac.dmg.
  2. After download is complete, double-click the installer disk image file.
  3. A new Finder window should open, called SPSSStatistics.
  4. In that window, double-click the installer application called SPSS_Statistics_Installer. It may take a few moments to launch.
  5. You may receive a warning, "This is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?" Click the Open button. You will then be prompted to enter your Mac OS X administrator username and password. Please do so, and click OK to continue.
  6. In the IBM SPSS Statistics installer window, select your language (English is default) and click OK to start the installation process.
  7. On the Introduction screen, click Next.
  8. On the License Type window, select the Authorized user license radio button, then click Next.
    • Note: If you are installing SPSS onto a machine that will be part of a local network/concurrent license, select the Concurrent user license option instead. You will need to have a local SPSS network license server running on your local area network to use this option. Check with your local network administrator for more details.
  9. On the License Agreement screen, you must accept the terms of the license. Click Next.
  10. On the Customer Information screen, enter the user name you want to use (your NetID would work), and Cornell University as the organization. Click Next.
  11. On the Help Language screen, select any languages in addition to English that you would like the Help screens to display. Click Next.
  12. On the Python Essentials screen, choose whether or not you would like to add this SPSS extension. Click Next. You will also need to accept the terms of this additional license to proceed.
  13. On the Choose Install Folder window, select or create a folder to hold the installation. We strongly recommend that you choose the default location. Click Next.
  14. On the Pre-Installation Summary screen, review the options you chose and click Install. The installer will run for several minutes.
  15. When the setup wizard has finished, you should see the License screen. If you would like to receive e-mail updates about SPSS from IBM, check the  box indicated on the screen. Click Done to proceed to license activation.
  16. On the Product Authorization window, select the button next to License my product now.  Click Next.
  17. Enter the authorization code you received in your SPSS order confirmation, then click Next.  (If you don't have your code, you can retrieve it online by following these instructions.)   
  18. If successful, the installer should report "Successfully processed all codes." Click Next.
  19. Click Finish. You have now completed the installation and license the authorization of your new SPSS software.

Update License Code on Existing SPSS Installation

  1. Start the IBM SPSS License Authorization Wizard:
    • Windows:
      1. In the Start menu, select All Programs.
      2. In your list of programs, you will see a folder called either SPSS or IBM SPSS Statistics. Open that folder.
      3. In that folder, you will see a program called either SPSS License Authorization Wizard or IBM SPSS Statistics License Authorization Wizard
      4. Right-click the License Authorization Wizard icon, and select Run As Administrator...
      5. Log in to a Windows user account with full Administrator access rights. (If you do not have a Windows user account with full Administrator rights, please see your local system administrator or technical support provider.)
      6. The License Authorization Wizard should then launch.
    • Mac OS X:
      1. In your Applications folder, you should see either an IBM folder or an SPSS folder. Open that folder.
      2. Inside that folder should be a folder called either SPSS , 19, 20, 21, or 22 (depending on your specific version). Open that folder.
      3. You should see an application called License Authorization Wizard. Double-click that program.
      4. The License Authorization Wizard should then launch.
  2. The wizard should display the License Status window, which shows the authorization status for all detected SPSS components.  Click Next.
  3. On the Product Authorization window, select the button next to License my product now. Click Next.
  4. Enter the authorization code you received in your SPSS order confirmation, then click Next.  (If you don't have your code, you can retrieve it online by following these instructions.)   
  5. If successful, the installer should report "Successfully processed all codes." Click Next.
  6. Click Finish. You have now completed the installation and license the authorization of your new SPSS software.

A note about older versions of SPSS: IBM no longer supports versions of SPSS earlier than version 19, and is not releasing product codes for them. If you are using an older version of SPSS, you must upgrade to version 19 or later.
