Hardware and Software

Hardware

The computer you use for telecommuting should meet the minimum guidelines found at the CIT Recommendations page.

In addition to the information you'll find there, telecommuting has a few additional items to think about.

  • Telecommuting is made simpler when you use the same laptop computer at home and at work. This arrangement means
    • You don't need to transfer files from one computer to another.
    • You don't have to install the same software on multiple computers.
    • It is easier to manage email.
  • If you have mobile device (smartphone, iPhone, BlackBerry, etc.) you may be able to access some Cornell services through it, but the device may not support your full range of technology needs. You will likely need a computer for efficient and extended telecommuting.
  • If you will be using a voice application, you'll need headphones and a microphone.
  • If you will be doing desktop video conferencing, you'll need a webcam (in addition to a microphone and headphones).

Software

Note: Please check with your local technical support provider before purchasing or installing any work-related software.

The software you use in your job tasks will, of course, need to be installed on your telecommuting computer. Many of the most commonly used applications are available at a reduced cost through CU Software Licensing Services.

In particular, be aware that university-licensed versions of Microsoft Office for work-at-home use only are available for free.  If you need an Office license for both work-at-home and personal use, a nominal fee of $9.95 may be paid directly to Microsoft. For details regarding both types of licensing, please visit CU Software Licensing Services: http://cusoftware.cornell.edu/cusoftware/purchase/msca.cfm. Alternatively, Office "clone" software is available for free at http://www.openoffice.org/. CIT does not support this software.

You should also check with your local technical support provider to learn if your department or unit has additional local licensing arrangements for software particular to your function.
