Accessing Services

This page lists commonly-used services you may want to access remotely. For services offered by your unit or department, ask local technical support how to access them from off campus.

Bear Access

You'll be able to use many campus services via the Bear Access tab on uPortal.Cornell. This includes the installers for Symantec AntiVirus.

Exchange Calendar

If you use different computers at work and at home, the web interface at exchange.cornell.edu/owa will allow you to use Exchange Calendar without installing any software.

EZ-Backup

CIT's EZ-Backup service works from off-campus as well as on, however, because most ISP networks are slower than Cornell's, backups will take longer. You may want to defer the backup to a time when you are not actively using your computer as a way of coping with a slower ISP network: turn on the option in the EZ-Backup client (TSM) that prompts you when a backup is about to start.

If you want to subscribe to EZ-Backup for your home computer you may do so if you have a university account for billing.

Other back up options

  • An option for backing up your documents is to purchase a flash drive (also known as a thumb-drive). These drives, about the size of a pack of gum, are a convenient way to store and transport files.
  • If you have access to your unit's file server from home (see Secure Your Access to the Campus Network), you may be able to store individual files on it for backup purposes.

DropBox (secure file transfer)

DropBox is an online Cornell service for securely transferring documents. Files are encrypted during transport. Confidential/sensitive information should not be sent via email; send it via DropBox to protect the information. DropBox is also a convenient way to transfer files that are too large to attach to email. To learn how to use DropBox, review How to Send and Receive Files with DropBox.
