Accessing Your Office Computer and Files on It

If you need access to your office computer and/or the files on it while you are telecommuting, consider how you will get to them:

  • If you have a laptop, take advantage of its portability and take it home with you. You'll have all your files and applications at your fingertips.
  • If you are using different computers at work and at home, a flash drive for transferring large files is very useful (and quite inexpensive).
  • Other options for file access:
    • Windows and Macintosh computers have built-in features for file sharing. You could theoretically set up an account to share files with yourself, but this may be neither safe nor practical. Please see Turn Off Anonymous Access to Your Computer for details.
  • Other options for computer access:
    • Remote desktop software is a way of working on your office computer from a remote one and having access to all your applications and files. It's just like working on your office computer. Your unit IT provider may be able to advise you on locally approved options. Keep in mind that:
      • Your office computer needs to be turned on for this type of service to work.
      • Your department may not allow the type of network connection needed for remote access.
      • Remote desktop access may entail software licensing costs.
      • CIT does not provide support for any remote desktop software.
