Telecommuting and Communicating during a Campus Emergency

Everyone should take appropriate steps to maintain communications with colleagues and Cornell in case a campus emergency disrupts normal Cornell communication services. In an emergency scenario you may be both telecommuting and using non-Cornell services.

Steps

  1. Find out how your unit expects to communicate during an emergency, particularly if key Cornell services like email are unavailable. Your emergency and IT planners may have a plan for using alternate services, for example instant messaging, that you should be aware of. Become familiar now with that plan.
  2. If your unit has an expectation that you will be using non-Cornell services to communicate with others in the unit, for example Gmail if Cornell email is unavailable, make sure you have a directory of contact information (addresses, screen names, etc.) Services your unit may anticipate using are outlined in other parts of this guide.
  3. Be familiar with Cornell's university-level emergency notification, communications and planning strategies:

Note: Please consult with you local technical support provider and emergency coordinator for information about your unit's emergency planning particularly with regard to communications strategies.
