Graduate/Professional Students - Exchange Email & Calendar Accounts

As a graduate or professional student, you have an additional option for your Cornell email -- an account on the university's Exchange system.

What Exchange is
Exchange is a service from Microsoft that manages email, calendars, task lists, and address books. CIT provides a campus-wide Cornell Exchange system for faculty, staff, and retirees, as well as for graduate or professional students who need it.

What graduate/professional student Exchange accounts are for
Cornell Exchange accounts for graduate or professional students are intended primarily to be used to perform university business while at Cornell. Guidance about whether a graduate or professional student's work is considered university business should be determined by the department or unit who oversees that work.

For graduate and professional students, Cornell Exchange accounts provide storage of up to 1 GB (gigabyte) and include email, calendar, tasks, and address books. These accounts are in addition to the Cmail account that every student receives, and/or the email account their department or college may provide.

  • Except for the smaller storage size, Cornell Exchange accounts for graduate and professional students are the same as Cornell Exchange accounts for faculty and staff.
  • Unlike Cmail accounts, which can continue to be used by students after they graduate from Cornell, Cornell Exchange accounts for graduate and professional students are deactivated after the student's affiliation with the university ends.

Activate your graduate/professional student Cornell Exchange account

  1. Go to the Exchange Email Activation site. Enter your NetID and password if requested by CUWebLogin.
(If you don't know your Cornell NetID or password, please call the Cornell Information Technologies HelpDesk at 607-255-8990 (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday) or send an email to helpdesk@cornell.edu)
  2. You'll see an Activate Your Exchange Email Account screen. Enter your NetID password where requested.
  3. Click Activate My Account.

You can now use your Cornell Exchange account.

  3. Look at the settings that show the other places where your Cornell email is being delivered. These may include your Cmail account and other accounts such as your Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. address. Adjust these settings if needed.

Use your graduate/professional student Cornell Exchange account

You can access your Cornell Exchange account in these university-supported ways. Click the links for instructions on getting started.

If none of the university-supported ways to read your Cornell email meets your needs, you can use any email application that supports the IMAP or POP email protocols. You would need to install and configure the email application on your own, and do your own troubleshooting if problems arise.
