How to Resolve Connection Issues: Windows XP

Add a new connection and configure TCP/IP.

Add a New Connection

  1. start_XP_btnFrom the Start menu, select Control Panel. The Control Panel window appears.
  2. Under Pick a category, click Network and Internet Connections. (If you do not see this screen, click Switch to Category View under Control Panel in the pane on the left.)
  3. Click Network Connections. Then, under Network Tasks on the left, click Create a new connection.

  4. The New Connection Wizard appears. Click Next.
  5. Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
  6. Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
  7. Select Connect using a broadband connection that is always on and click Next.
  8. Click Finish to close the New Connection Wizard.

Configure TCP/IP

  1. localAreaConnection_iconIn the Network Connections window, double-click the icon under LAN or High-Speed Internet. The Local Area Connection Status dialog box appears.
  2. In the Local Area Connection Status dialog box, click Properties. The Local Connection Properties dialog box appears.
  3. Click the General tab. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box appears.
  4. Click the General tab. Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  5. Click OK or Close to close all three dialog boxes and return to the Network Connections window.
  6. Close the Network Connections window.
  7. Open an Internet browser (such as Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Explorer).
  8. Go to the Cornell Network registration page. (This page may load automatically.)
  9. Complete the online registration.
