Getting Connected at Cornell: Wi-Fi, Wired, Phone, and TV

Internet Access

All residences halls and houses offer network and Internet connectivity for all residents. Most residence hall rooms offer both Wi-Fi and wired network connection capability. A small number of residences are exclusively one or the other.

The secure Wi-Fi services offered at Cornell, eduroam and RedRover-Secure, are recommended for all Wi-Fi users. Both eduroam and RedRover-Secure encrypt the Wi-Fi portions of data transmissions, and are the most secure options.

Note: To register an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, see How to Set Up a RedRover-Secure Connection: iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad.

Register Devices that Don't Have Browsers

In addition to connecting a computer to the network, you may want to add devices that don't have browsers, such as a game console, an IP phone, a router, a DirectTV box, or a Netflix-ready device. Each device must be registered. See How to Register a Device without a Browser.

Track Your Network Usage

Cornell student network service provides unlimited on-campus and off-campus network traffic.  However, please note that while network use is unlimited, off-campus network traffic which exceeds a monthly billing threshold (currently 50 GB) incurs a usage charge. Off-campus network traffic is any network traffic to or from a network connection site at Cornell that accesses a network location outside the university.  On-campus network traffic (network traffic which remains entirely within the university network) does not count towards the billing threshold.  You can find the complete explanation of network usage charges on the Network Usage-Based Billing (NUBB) Fees and Billing page.

Most people do not use more than the current billing threshold in off-campus traffic. However, if you use streaming video applications such as YouTube or Hulu or file-sharing applications such as BitTorrent, your off-campus traffic can add up quickly. Student network usage is tracked as the combined total of both Wi-Fi usage (over Cornell’s Wi-Fi network) and wired usage (over the wired data network).

Other activities that count toward the threshold are:

  • Downloading or streaming video (YouTube, iTunes, the NetFlix “watch instantly” service, or Internet TV sites like Hulu or Joost).
  • Placeshifting—viewing TV provided to your permanent home (or other off-campus location) via a networked device on campus.
  • Using the iCloud to listen to music stored in your iTunes library, etc.

Cornell provides tools so you can track your off-campus Internet usage:

  • The Network Usage-Based Billing (NUBB) system is updated daily. NUBB also allows you to view your monthly patterns.
  • E-mail alerts: Information Technologies (CIT) alerts you if your off-campus usage approaches the billing threshold.

Computer Security Requirements for Students

Go to the Student Security page for complete information about computer security at Cornell.

Student Telephone Service

Cornell’s student telephone service and associated fees vary depending on which residence hall you live in. For more information, go to the Student Voice Service page.

Residence Hall TV Service

DirecTV, an entertainment television service, is available over IP in the university residence halls. This service, and support for the service, is provided by Campus Televideo. To sign-up for DirecTV service, go to the Campus Televideo web site.

If you sign up for DirecTV service, you must register your receiver. To register your receiver, see How to Register a Device without a Browser.
