Higher Education Privacy and Information Management Forum (PIM Forum)

Cornell University Office of Information Technology Policy and George Washington University Law School announce:

What: A one-day event to discuss issues of privacy and information management in higher education
When: May 4, 2012
Where: George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C.
How much: There is no registration cost associated with this conference
Who: Any and all who can make the event are welcome to attend

This event will kick off with a panel discussion, but most of the day will be spent in smaller breakout discussion groups to foster interactivity and engagement.

In addition to laying the foundation for privacy in the information management context, the goal of this conference is to break through our traditional silos of information or data "stewards," legal counsel, information technology, risk management and privacy officers.

Please see our tentative agenda. The initial panel will focus on the privacy and information management problems in higher education and how they appear from a variety of perspectives.  The discussion sessions will focus on how institutions of higher education can address problems involving online social media, the tension between openness and control via surveillance, network monitoring, data use restrictions, and how to understand the broad and sometimes vague rubric of "privacy."  In other words, what privacy means to the missions of higher education.

Confirmed speakers are:

  • Lauren Steinfeld, Chief Privacy Officer, University of Pennsylvania
  • Kent Wada, Director, Strategic Information Technology and Privacy Policy, UCLA
  • Margaret O'Donnell, Associate General Counsel for Policy and Compliance, Catholic University of America
  • Joseph Storch, Associate Counsel at the State University of New York.

Event coordinators Daniel Solove and Tracy Mitrano will also speak.

We are purposefully inviting multiple people within institutions in order to break through the proverbial silos.  Please feel free to pass this invitation along to a colleague at your institution or at another school.

Please let us know whether or not you can attend using the survey link below.  We very much look forward to seeing you at this event!
