Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE+)

OBIEE+ is the Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition "plus", a suite of Business Intelligence tools that will enable reporting and analysis for all Cornell business areas. Cornell's OBIEE+ license includes Brio-Hyperion, the reporting tool that the campus community has used extensively for the last decade. The OBIEE+ project team is creating, using, and learning from prototypes now, making progress toward OBIEE eventually succeeding Brio-Hyperion as the centrally supported Business Intelligence reporting tool.

Implementing OBIEE for Cornell

The project to implement OBIEE+ at Cornell is multi-phased, funded and scheduled through FY11. During the initial discovery phase, our team gained necessary core product knowledge, developed OBIEE system infrastructure, created best practices and procedures, and began prototypes for several subject areas.

Now, as we close in on the end of the implementation phase, we have built upon the infrastructure, support, and development foundations, expanded OBIEE knowledge both within CIT and the pilot user community, and rolled out to dozens of users working with the Kuali Financial System, another long-term project underway.

Pilot Projects

Currently, the implementation phase involves work on multiple OBIEE prototypes, two of which are in Production (IS Activity, and CIT Financials), with a third soon to migrate into Production (Remedy).  Each pilot has differing reporting and/or security requirements, so working through these continues to augment our understanding of the system.

  • IS Activity: provides reports from monthly staff activity data to CIT Information Systems assistant/associate directors
  • CIT Financials: provides reports on CIT transactional accounting data using customized views to CIT financial planning managers
  • Remedy: provides customized reports not available within Remedy and acts as a template for how to report from similar systems

OBIEE Architecture

OBIEE works independently of database platform and also with non-database structures through a variety of services. In the discovery phase, we focused on building the central infrastructure (highlighted in yellow below). The implementation phase focuses on building out the additional services that will deliver business intelligence to audiences in varied business areas.
